Cell phones in camp

I have to confess I hate having cell phones, internet access, and sometimes tv at camp. Unfortunately my father is getting older and definitely want to have a way of reaching some one just incase. Has anyone ever used a cell phone signal booster? If so how was it and was it worth it? Where my cabin is I have zero signal.

never used a booster but i agree with you, it would be nice having it around strictly for those 911 situations.

Re: Cell phones in camp

I have a Cell phone booster in my truck, it does help bring signal in stronger. But, you have to have some kind of signal Close in order for it to work. meaning if you have signal a mile up the hill or down the road it will probably help, if you are miles away from signal it wont bring any in. Example-we have signal about 2-3 miles up the road from the cabin, not much but signal usually 1-2 bars on a good day but enough to make a call and get a text thru" if you stand in the bed of your truck with your right leg in the air and left hand pointed North" when I plug booster in it bumps it to 2-4 bars of signal. So then, I tried my booster at the cabin and it did not have any signal. just thought I would throw you some info...

Life is good when your Phone says No Signal!!

Like clearcut said, if you do not have signal at all a booster will not help. Boosters do just that...boost the signal, not create signal. One good thing though is many of these systems come with antennas that can be placed at higher ground or in an area outside away from the house that does have service which will help you out

Re: Cell phones in camp

We have a 2nd home in 3C, we have all those things you don't like at "camp"
At one time had a landline. NO cell signal at the house, but able to connect not far away on top of hill.
Added a booster and it works great (Verizon). my work cell also Verizon now keeps me connected, I know contrary to camp usage, and I can stay in touch with all the kids via texts, etc.

Re: Cell phones in camp

What types of boosters do you guys use? I have 1-2 bars outside. I would like to have it inside. Are the boosters expensive?

Thanks,
Rick

Wilson, they aren't too pricy, a couple hundred dollars for everything you would need probably.

Couple hundred!?! I thought you were gonna say 50$ or less. I'll stick to my 1 or 2 bars outside, and the occasional dropped call before I spend that.

Re: Cell phones in camp

the Wilson booster I have was $100 and I got a 110volt adaptor for it a radio shack for $12. Phone bill at the cabin was $14 a month no long distance we had to use phone cards to call home so in one year time the booster pays for it self plus it made 2 trips to montana where we were 100 miles from a pay phone let alone if we had truck problems.
