Electric Bills

Have a cabin in Laceyville Pa, small, maybe 850 square feet. As we speak I have one thermometer on at 50 degrees in the kitchen area to keep the pipes warm. During the deer season from mid November to the end of December I got a bill for $175. Penelec is my company. Their bill was $70, the other 105 was for some IDT company. I then received a bill from Jan 25 to Feb 27 for $278, again, Penelec's charge was for $46 dollars and $231 was for this IDT company. Apparently, this IDT company is charging me for a "variable-rate" program which I NEVER SIGNED UP FOR! I received a few calls during the fall about switching to this program and I said absolutely not, because for much of the winter I flush out the pipes and turn the power completely off. This winter I decided to leave the power on because I wanted to go up occasionally. Like I said, I have one thermostat on at 50 degrees. There is a huge scam going on...I contacted the PUC and the AG's office over this. My lawyer told me not to pay any fees unles IDT can show proof of me signing my electric server over to them which I never did. Anyone else having this kind of problem?

Re: Electric Bills

Irish, sorry to hear that. I am lucky and have not seen this on our bill. There must be many people having similar issues. I just heard a blurb on the radio to contact the Attorney General. Hope it resolves for you.

Re: Electric Bills

I have not had this happen to me personally but lately on the local news (Pittsburgh) they have been doing a few stories about this happening. They have done like you, contact the AG and the PUC, I think they have received some favorable results.

Unless you are the lead dog, the view is always the same...

Re: Electric Bills

Can this bogus IDT company come after me or try and ruin my credit? I never signed up with anyone.

Re: Electric Bills

I would also call Penelec and see if they can provide any information.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Re: Electric Bills

I have Tri-County REC (co-op) at my camp, so no other options were ever made available, as to alternative suppliers.

Big deal here at home with PPL as our supplier, since we've been bombarded with alternatives for the past year or two. Having looked them over, decided to stay with PPL, so no shocks or flim flams as many have complained about, who apparently opted for a variable rate with some other source?

As for being switched and having no knowledge of having approved any switch, went thru that two years ago with the Verizon bill for camp. Some outfit I'd never heard of, took over the long distance portion of that bill.

Think it's called "slamming", where third party entities somehow horn-in on existing utility bills without the actual approval of the account holder.

PUC and the Attorney General are both looking into the variable rate elec. bills. Contact them with complaints, as well as your previous supplier.

Some folks' learnin' curves just look like circles...3A Camp/also hunt 4B

Re: Electric Bills

Have you lawyer send them a letter demanding proof you that you signed up for the service. If they dont have the proof have him send a cease and desist letter. Also contact the media I am willing to bet you arent the only this happened to and others will come forward.

Re: Electric Bills

I was surprised this year too with my electric bill form West Penn. I have a cabin 12x20 and just built on a 10x14 room last summer. I have electric base board heat and did the same in new addition with a 1500 watt heater. I always turn off heat after rifle season and only have a frig and dust to dawn light on and bill will run around 10.00 a month. This year I decided since I plumbed my kitchen added hot water tank for sink and new shower I would leave heat on all winter going to go to cabin more often. I left heat on at min. setting say around 55 degree. My dec. jan bill was 165.00. Thought dang its hot water tank doing it so I turned it off. Next bill was 155.00 thought o crap no more heat until I go to cabin and just turn on. Muy plans was to go more often than usual but my mom got down and passed away in mid Jan. than the weather broke loose and I plow snow in winter months so I didn't get there like I wanted too. Tough lesson to learn.
