Sunday Hunting Could Be Nail in Coffin

Quote:
During my eight years as a PGC commissioner (1996-2004) and 40 years as a deputy wildlife conservation officer, I had the wonderful opportunity and experience to talk about hunting issues with folks across our entire state and nation.
Private owners hold nearly 80 percent of available land in the state, and I was very much interested in their opinions, concerns and suggestions as to the availability of that land and how it is directly related to the longevity of public hunting.
I can tell you without question, the availabililty of much of that land is hanging by a thin thread. A very significant percentage of the landowners need only a flimsy excuse to close their lands permanently.
Asking them to post for no Sunday hunting will be answered with a closing of the door completely. This sentiment reaches far beyond the agriculture community. There are those who will find that they can have the control they want by game ranching and leased-land hunting. Private land closed to public management is an accelerating trend, not just a fad.
Shall we drive coffin nails into the hunting tradition by permitting what many believe to be a selfish claim to outdoor time and space availability? I love hunting, but if we are not careful we could love it to death.

Re: Sunday Hunting Could Be Nail in Coffin

In the 7 years since the man's retirement, most of the land that was hanging by a thread, has since been posted. I don't buy his reasoning for No Sunday hunting. Out of the 80% of private land owners, I have to wonder what percentage hunts or close family members hunt! The land has either already been posted or will be posted, with or without Sunday hunting.

From a selfish view point, I hope they don't pass Sunday hunting. I would hate to be in a stand on my property in Ohio, second guessing my decision not to hunt my Pa property! By the way, my Ohio property is posted and so is my Pa property.

Yep, it'll be the end of hunting, just like in forty three other states.

40 years in the trenches is tough to dismiss as rhetoric.

I am not sure those other 43 states have the same type wildlife agency set-up as we do in PA.

Kinda another reason why the PGC should be the ones making the call and not politicians.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Perhaps that's because 43 other states dont have as many hunters against hunting that Pa has.

You would agree that game agencies have the best handle on hunter/landowner relations?
