Brain storm

I see a legislator is proposing a bill to establish an "antlerless allocation committee", which would set deer harvest goals and dictating that such decisons be binding on the Game Commission.

Surprised he didn't just demand the abolishment of the Game Commission and propose a bill to let local communities set their own deer management goals?

Probably got the idea from watching news coverage of the Occupy mobs at work, in various cities around the country?

Re: Brain storm

Rumor is, that his next bill would require that prison wardens make sure each inmate has a key to their own cells and free use of a vehicle?

Re: Brain storm

Probably an idea that was cooked up by the USP!

Got a name to go with that proposed legislation?

MEMORANDUM

TO: All House Members

FROM: <span style='font-size: 17pt'><span style="color: #FF0000">Representative Mike Hanna</span></span>

DATE: November 1,2011

SUBJECT: Legislation Amending the Duties of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and
Providing for an Antlerless Deer Harvest Committee

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designed to focus the mission of the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) on sportsmen, while also giving hunters more involvement in the management of whitetail deer.

As you may know, the POC is responsible for managing game in the Commonwealth. Within the last decade, the POC has changed their deer management strategy. This change has demonstrated that the PGC is not considering the needs of sportsmen. As such, the legislation that I will be
introducing would amend the duties of the POC to focus primarily on serving the interests of sportsmen, including maximizing the sustainable yield of the whitetail deer herd.

This legislation would also establish an Antlerless Deer Harvest Committee. Currently, the POC determines antlerless deer allocations with minimal public involvement. Under this legislation, an Antlerless Deer Harvest Committee would review the information and calculations and accept
the recommendations or propose their own allocations. The decision of the committee would be binding on the POC.

Since sportsmen are the primary means used by the PGC to manage game, I believe it is imperative that we ensure that the PGC is serving the interests of our sportsmen and providing for their involvement in the management of our wildlife resources.

If you would like to co-sponsor this measure, please contact Gayle Jones at 717-782-2282 or
[email protected].

Indeed, this is a USP inspired bill.

Once again, Rep Hanna is shown to be self serving and without regard for the resource or proper wildlife management.

Once again, Hanna has his targets set on the GC over deer without the need or forethought to research and understand the many variables. His insistence that little public comment or input in decisions flies in the face of any rational thought. Just as his insistence that the deer program is flawed, notwithstanding the WMI report the legislature paid for a little over a year ago. The same report Unified was in favor of … until it didn’t work for them.

A quick call or email to your legislature opposing this is in order.

Remember, legislative control of wildlife and hunting might seem like a good thing, but we need only look at the MD and NJ bear seasons to see the truth.

We are only ever one election away from a change that could make legislation like this become no hunting legislation.

The big point is - keep legislators out of wildlife management. It has been disastrous where ever it has occurred.

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.

How about calls to his office. Might be even more effective.

Re: Brain storm

Typical for a Hanna bill. At this point it is a toe in the water looking for co-sponsers. You may be better off contacting your representatives asking them not to co-sponser the thing.

Re: Brain storm

Isn't he leadership now? Pretty sure he is?

Doesn't he realize the $50G WMI audit last year verified the way the PGC does business is correct? It was supposed to put all of this nonsense to rest.
