2011 Deer Plan. Meeting

Very interesting meeting this morning: 2011 Deer Plan Update Meeting, held at HACC.

PGC deer biologists presentation on current deer management program; Introduction/background on deer management in PA, going back to the early 1900s.

Goals of the program; How management recommendations are made, based on collected data.

Status of whitetail deer in PA; Achievement of goals and deer management tasks (Where we have been; Where we are; Where we are headed).

Extensive Deer Program Webpage demonstration, using the actual PGC website. Some very good info/data on that webpage and it's accessible for anyone that wants to learn about the subject.

Followed by discussions, Q&A, concerns expressed by attendees. Issues covered: WMU "tweaks"; CWD; County treasurers involved in doe tags; Predation; Deer dispersal; MYH doe tag transfers; Forest impact studies and lots more.

Best few hours I've spent, lately.

Re: 2011 Deer Plan. Meeting

From the discussions:

WMU "tweaks" on a five year cycle, next due up in 2013. Some changes were made in 2008, like a boundary change in 3C and adjustments to some boundaries in 5C.

Citizen Surveys (random) have now taken the place of CACs, which were conducted for all WMUs, for hunter/non-hunter inputs.

Question about MYH using DMAPs or red tag permits? Not applicable, because the changes to MYH only affected licenses, not permit programs such as DMAP.

CWD and captive deer. Deer farms are now under PA Dept. of Agriculture, but CWD is primarily being monitored by PGC. Thousands of PA deer have been tested for CWD.

Map hand out on location of CWD in WV and MD: It is now confirmed 10.15 miles from the PA border, in Allegany County, MD. The primary CWD cluster in WV, is in Hampshire County, with another postive across the border in Fredrick County, VA.

Re: 2011 Deer Plan. Meeting

I'm on board with most things Deer, reccomendation-wise. And this "WMU tweaks", to me, is the most important. Not sure why so many cry "They're giving in" or "They're going against the Science" when a said "tweak" is made. I sat front and center on Alt's tour, and he said as fact, that nothing is perfect, and he was sure "tweaks" would be needed as the program irons itself out. Kudo's to current commissioner's for implementing "tweaks". Geez, I'm sick of typing "tweak".

Re: 2011 Deer Plan. Meeting

Antlerless allocations have been adjusted; Some borders of WMUs have been changed for good reasons; Concurrent seasons have been altered; ARs have been changed.

And yet, some still insist that nothing has changed, as far as deer management is concerned?
