Governor Gets Bill: WCO Use Of Body Cameras

Legislation that would allow Pennsylvania’s wildlife conservation officers and waterways conservation officers to use body cameras is on its way to becoming law.

The state House of Representatives give final approval Monday to House Bill 2178, which will permit conservation officers of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Fish and Boat Commission to use the devices already worn by police.

Supporters say body cameras have been shown to reduce the number of incidents involving force. The cameras can also record evidence should an incident reach the point of prosecution.

The Game Commission bought body cameras for its officers in 2012 and they were used before an update to the state’s wiretap law earlier this year failed to include them.

This bill specifically precludes the majority of conservation officers from using these cameras. The over 500 deputy officers were not included.

Re: Governor Gets Bill: WCO Use Of Body Cameras

We need to work on that next session.

I got an email on this one that said the democrats had a real problem with WCO having the camera's. Yet it passed with a large mega majority.

The effort to get deputies the authority to wear these cam's should be engaged now. Preferably with a sponsor in the house and the senate.

The question is, is this an item the deputies would need to purchase, or would this be agency issued?

There are many items that WCO'S are issued and carried that are not provided to DWCO's. That fact is provided up front to prospective canidates.

Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion, without the discomfort of thought.
