Wild Goose Chase

WILD GOOSE CHASE @ Middle Creek Wildlife Mgmt Area

WHY: This event is a fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Conservation Heritage Museum, to be built in the near future onto the current Middle Creek Visitor's Center.

WHAT: 5K and 10K races; both start at 9:30 a.m. from the Middle Creek Visitors Center located along Hopeland Road, Kleinfeltersville, Pa. The 5K will be a trail race that begins on hardtop road, turns to dirt/gravel road within the first ¼ mile and then proceeds onto a challenging and wooded trail-run that meanders through State Game Land #46, ending where it began at the Visitor's Center. The 10K will follow a macadam road that meanders through the relatively flat terrain of the Middle Creek goose management area before returning to the start finish line on gravel/dirt/ paved surfaces. The final 3 miles will include moderate hills as the course meanders under the closed canopy of Middle Creek's forested acres. The 10K will completely circle the 400+ acre lake that is home to as many as 200,000 migrating Canada and Snow Geese throughout various times of the year.

WHERE: Middle Creek WMA is located in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties, just south of the town of Kleinfeltersville. From Route 897 (Main Street) in Kleinfeltersville, turn south onto Hopeland Road... go about 2 miles to the Visitior's Center. Middle Creek is just 35 minutes from Reading, 40 minutes from Lancaster and 20 minutes from Lebanon.
HOW: You can register online at www.pretzelcitysports.com or download a race application at the same site. Applications are also available by calling race director Mike Schmit at 610/334-1041 and leaving a short message to include your name and mailing address. Registration available on race day from 8:00 - 9:15 a.m. ($25 prior to Sept.1; $30 on and after Sept. 1) T-shirt for early registrants & while supply lasts on and after Sept. 1.
Prizes will include a framed 'Working Together For Wildlife fine art print to the male and female winner in each of the two races. Also, the top three finishers in each race will receive medals for each of the following age categories... 14 & under, 15-19; 20-29; 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+. Door prizes will be provided to participants by random drawing.
Food truck available onsite. Indoor restroom facilities. Plenty of parking at the Visitors Center. Event will take place rain or shine.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!
