Pier or Surf At Myrtle Beach

I will be going to Myrtly Beach next week.
I hope to get out to fish a couple of mornings.
I have a cheap surf rod and would buy what ever rigs the tackle shop worker recomends when I get there. But my other option is the Apache pier that I could walk to and use what they recomend. I have done both before with very little success. What would you do? Also any recomendations for a 1/2 day party boat close by that I could take my 12 year old daughter?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Pier or Surf At Myrtle Beach

Tie up a simple double drop rig with circle hooks sized to catch the target fish. Use whatever live or fresh dead bait the shop recommends. Avoid the "tourist" double drop rigs at the bait shop with all the jewelry on them.
Use 20# to 30# fluorocarbon line to tie up your rigs and put a snap on the bottom lead for your weight and tie on a sampo swivel or something similar on top that you can snap or tie your mainline onto. This rig is mostly for smaller fish...

If you want sharks, you'll need to go much bigger/heavier with a BIG fishfinder rig with at least 40# mainline and 6' or so long 200# to 400# mono leader and a 16/0 to 20/0 circle hook.

Suburban redneck.

Re: Pier or Surf At Myrtle Beach

Thanks for the advice. would you go to the pier or just surf fish? I dont think I am geared to land a shark but it would be fun to fight one for a while.

Re: Pier or Surf At Myrtle Beach

I always fish off the surf, iv never had luck at piers. At low tide walk the beach and find the low spots or pools, mentally mark them and fish those areas with high tide. I always had luck with the tide comming in even during the middle if the day... If you find a sandbar fish the low spot right infront or behind the bar. Also the fish arent alway out really far, iv caught lots of fish where the waves break.
