OBX fishing

Hey guys, headed to Avon next month for our vacation, never been to obx before. Looking for some fishing ideas, we usually go to ocmd, and I have all the surf gear.

Re: OBX fishing

Since you're staying in Avon, go to Frank and Fran's bait and tackle shop and Frank can steer ya onto what's biting, and what tackle is needed. Keep in mind that a lot of the beaches are closed to vehicular traffic now. You have to find the ones that are open and do your best. Take a kitchen strainer and strain the sand for "sand fleas". Great bait for pompano, blues, mackeral, etc.

I gotta go agitate the techies!

Re: OBX fishing

You can do real good out of the surf anywhere from Avon to Hatteras...........

The pier in Avon is also a good place to fish if you dont mind paying for a day or so........

How about up on Carova?? Leaving Fri for a week. Taking the shark surf gear. Taking some bait, but wondering if Spanish mackerel can be bought in or around Corolla??

Re: OBX fishing

We are staying at Corolla, and I do believe that Corova is the closest town.

Re: OBX fishing

I just got back from a week in Avon. We caught nothing but really small pompano and flounder. We fished one day not far from Hatteras point and the other on Ocracoke.

Admittedly, I'm not much of a saltwater fisherman. I spend most of my time chasing bass in ponds here in PA. I'm learning though.

Driving on the sand near Hatteras was REAL bad. The sand was real soft and me and my buddy both got our Ram trucks stuck and ended up ripping off the front spoiler from under the front bumper. Lots of other vehicles getting stuck and losing parts. Ocracoke was 180 degrees opposite. The sand there was almost like driving on pavement and we didn't even need four wheel drive.
