Menhaden bait balls equals blues

Spent a week fishing the OBX surf. Water was very warm for this time of the year, clear and calm. All three of those usually equate to slow fishing.

The one exception to that was when big balls of menhaden would get within casting distance of the beach. Usually yhe bait balls were beyond casting distance on the other side of the outer bar. Every now and then, a black blob of menhaden would be pushed into the slough and it could be reaching with stingsilvers and mirror lures.

Even though the menhaden did not look to be too nervous, there were nice sized blues following them north. We managed to pull in quite a few off of the bait balls. You would snag a lot of menhaden as well during the process and many times, they would get their tails chewed off when reeling them in.

You would never know there were blues under those bait balls unless you threw some metal at them. Too bad the bait balls did not come close enough very often. We would maybe get a shot or two per day if we were watching the surf.

Re: Menhaden bait balls equals blues

I was just down there for the week too...........I was up further North than usual, stasying at a buddies uncles house, but I fished everywhere from Hatteras to Jeanette Pier......the first few days we were there, there was huge balls of menhaden swimming around Jeanette pier on and off all day...........guys were yanking blues out on gotcha plugs on and off all day long..........

We did OK fishing, most of the better fishing I had was down towards Hatteras/Frisco though....

Get some Gotcha style plugs. Red/white, silver/red, and gold/red seemed to do the best for us, just jig them while reeling in. Also Hopkins spoons usually work good.

Pink sting silvers are my preferred. They throw great if fishing the surf. Reel them back fast with a twitching motion. Mirror lures are second, Hopkins spoons as well. Gotchas work well from piers. I find them difficult in the surf as the tend to dig into the sand.

If the bait balls come close in low light(mornings and evenings) there should be blues and Spanish around them.

I have decent luck with gotchas in the surf, but they are tough to keep up off the bottom. I like mirro lures also.

Re: Menhaden bait balls equals blues

Try snagging a menhaden out of the ball as well. Put it on a slip sinker rig and pitch it out. Hook em in the tail and let them free swim. The blues were biting the tails off and we managed to bring a few in doing this as well. They did not last long if the water was clear.

My favorite from the beach is the 1 1/4 ounce pink sting silver. I run 10 pound test mono as the main line then a 2 foot piece of 30 pound flourocarbon shock leader. I have caught blues and Spanish with gotchas from the surf, but much prefer them on a pier. Try the sting silvers next time. They are similar to mirror lures but more slender and I think cast better when distance is needed.
