Halibut Fishing Adventure...Spectacular Fishing!

My halibut adventure began back in March. I booked two spots at a sportsman show, and received a show special of 15% off. I have been wanting to fish for halibut for a long time now, and just never booked a trip. Sure wish I had done a trip a long time ago. So fun! Washington State provided a great day on the Pacific, with fishing that would rival Alaska. We were on the boat at 0345, and on our way! [img:center][/img]

Re: Halibut Fishing Adventure...Spectacular Fishing!

The Ocean was flat calm that day. A pleasant 3hr and 20 min ride to the fishing grounds, and it was time to fish! It took a few minutes to get your bait (squid, herring, and fish meat) down to the bottom. I reeled up my slack line and jigged my bait. Before long, I felt some slow, heavy tugs on my line. The tugs got stronger.....FISH ON!!! That fast!! After a long, arm burning fight to the top, I see him...I yell Color!!! The deck hand arrived with the gaff.

With the swing of the gaff, my halibut was on the deck. It was an average fish, 35lbs. Soon, the hooks were re baited, and it was my friends turn. His halibut was a tad bigger than mine, close to 40lbs. Soon the boat was full and we were en route to fish for black rockfish and Ling cod.

Soon the boat was full 180 rockfish, 10 per person. Great scenery. Out on the halibut grounds, we could barely see the snow on top of the Olympic mountains. Closer to shore where this pic was taken, the view was outstanding. [img:center][/img]

Re: Halibut Fishing Adventure...Spectacular Fishing!

I have a home in E. Washington....was a 5hr drive to Westport. Deck hands filleted and baged all the fish. Brought it home in a cooler of ice. The fish is delicious. May bring some back to PA later this summer. The day we arrived, we crabbed in the harbor. Red Rock and Dungeness crabs were plentiful, but keepers were hard to come by. Still great fun. The charter office gave us a crab ring and some bait. I brought my pot and some chicken for bait. Between pulling the ring, and measuring crab, and sorting the pot catch, kept us busy.

Re: Halibut Fishing Adventure...Spectacular Fishing!

Looks like an awesome trip! Halibut are my favorite fish and I'm looking forward to wetting a line off of POW Island this fall. Of course after I tag a black bear. Hope we have 1/2 the luck you all did. Thanks for sharing and congrats!
