Back from bear hunt with Stony Brook Outfitters

Had a great trip. Lodge was rustic but nice, food was good and plenty, all 12 hunters were great guys to be around and Bob Parker and the guides were accomplished woodsmen.

Despite less than ideal conditions 8 out of 12 killed, 3 were hit and lost, everyone saw at least 1 bear and only 1 hunter had no shot opportunity.

Monday night we killed 5 bears, a 240 lb boar, a 185 lb boar and 3 yearlings around 100 lbs including my crossbow sow. 2 were hit but not recovered. Tuesday was a wash with a strong low coming through and no one seeing anything. Wednesday one of the hunters who wounded on Monday killed a yearling boar. Thursday the other hunter who wounded Monday with his compound killed a 214 lb boar with his rifle. Friday the last bear was killed, another yearling, and one was hit and lost. One of the hunters passed on several opportunities during the week holding out for a big one.

Final stats, 12 hunters:

At least 25 bear sighted

8 killed, 3 wounded.

2 opportunities passed up.

Here's my bear, I'll be posting a detailed story in either Big Game or Bear and Elk with lots of pics in the next day or two.

Sweet. Was wondering how you did. If you could, tell us about your broadhead, shot placement and how far the bear went after being hit.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Excal Firebolt with 125gr G5 Montec, about a 15 yard shot.

Bear was quartering to me more than I would have liked but I got in one of those situations were she turned straight to me with the bow shouldered at ready and no rest. Another second or two and I would have had to drop the bow out of battery and spooked her. Just in time she turned enough to shoot.

The bolt took her through the near front shoulder mid way up, passed through and exited in front of the off side hind quarter (you can see the exit in the pic). She ran about 30 yards and fell DRT.

Nice. A bear over bait is on my bucket list.
