Looking for combo outfitted hunt......

My Dad will be 71 this August, and he is the one that involved me in the outdoors especially hunting when I was young. We have hunted together for over 25 years (I am 38 now) and finally took our first outfitted hunt back in 2008 where we both took really nice black bears in Canada.

We have property that has been my Dad's dream that is getting to much for him to take care of not only financailly, but time and work. He had cancer and missed a lot of work and went through all of his savings and is now behind on the bills. It is difficult for me with 2 kids (3rd on the way) to get up there and help all that often. He is going to sell it b/c as retired $$$$ goes it is getting to be too much.

He told me that if he sells it and we loose our hunting spot, he would use the money for both of us to go on another paid hunt. This is where the help comes in......

We would be interested in some kind of combo hunt (i.e. moose, caribou, bear, deer, etc.....) with guns. My Dad has never been much into the archery, but I do hunt with a bow. Since he is going on 71, something like a mt. goat hunt would not be a really good option. He is in decent shape for 71, but I would have to drag him up the mountains.
Any suggestions???????

Below is my Dad and I with a turkey I took on the property.....

C Carr do whatever you can to keep that land! Maybe you and some buddies, whatever it takes. This way even if you buy dad out, he can still hunt it and be a part of it. Good Luck. Sorry to stray off topic.

Camp life,it don't get much better!

Re: Looking for combo outfitted hunt......

This one just about tears me in half. If I were you, I would do what it takes to keep that land. Ordinarily I would advise you on any of several nice hunting trips, but first you should secure your future hunting in PA. That should be your first priority.
On the other hand, you need to consider what is your Dad's first priority. If he has always wanted to go on such a hunt, you should move heaven and Earth to make it so for him before he can't do it anymore.
Lordy, but I am glad I am not the one who has to decide this one. I really hate to see you have to make such a decision, but in the final analysis, it is your Dad's decision to make. Respect that.

Now, as to combination hunts, here are a few things you need to know.
1. Can your Dad ride horses?
2. Would he be comfortable sleeping in a tent camp packed in by horse, or would he prefer the comfort of a lodge type camp or wall tent camp with heated tents?
3. What game species are the top priority?
4. What is the maximum amount of money you want to spend for two people.
5. You say he is in good shape for his age. Could he walk five miles in one day?
6. Would steep mountains or significant hills be totally out of the question?
7. Does your hunt have to be in North America or could it be in Africa? I took my wife on a hunt in Africa for about what a good quality elk/mule deer hunt costs (all expenses included) and I took six animals.

After you have the answers to the above, I suggest you sit down with a good booking agent or two and discuss what is possible. Premier Hunting Adventures sponsors this website and that might be a great place to start. If you still want advice from someone who has been on a bunch of great hunting trips, feel free to drop me a PM with specific questions.

Try to keep the land no matter what. They're not making any more of it. Could you lease the land for a few years? Make enough money to go on a paid hunt and be able to hunt in Pa. a few years down the road. Any timber on the land? Gas well?

Compared to northwest areas like Alaska, Yukon, and BC... Newfoundland offers cheaper combo moose, caribou, and bear hunts. The hunts are high success, not physically demanding, and you can drive roundtrip for about $800 making getting there and bringing back whatever you want very cheap.

I agree with Muttley, contact Larry at Premier Hunting Adventures. Just click on his banner that appears on every page of this forum. He has the resources and contacts to get what you want out of a hunt. Muttley also set a good list of questions that you should have answers to before going forward.

The other thing about Larry, his work is free to you and others using the service.

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.

For a 71-year-old and you as a bowhunter.....you can't beat caribou hunting in Quebec. Two caribou for sure...possibly black bear thrown in, and ptarmigan hunting and loads of fishing. This trip has everything. And he can hunt with a gun, while you hunt with a bow. Adventure of a lifetime.
