Bear Outfitters with Hounds

I've been researching a bear hunt to take my son on for a while and the thought of a hound hunt sounds like fun. It would probably be more exciting than sitting in a stand for hours and hours a day and we may need to take less time off. Does anyone have any recommendations? Preferrable in Maine? Thanks.

Thanks. That's what I like to hear. How long were your hunts? I have seen 3 day hunts as well as 5 and 6 day hunts. Did you guys see a bear each day? We are not too picky about getting a giant bear. I just want to have some fun and get my boy his first bear. Thanks.

Re: Bear Outfitters with Hounds

I see that Stony Brook charges an extra $750 for a non-hunting guest. As I can't send my son up by himself, that really increases the cost of the hunt. I sure hope that's negotiable as that's a breaking point.

Re: Bear Outfitters with Hounds

I just got back from crooked tree lodge a couple of weeks ago. We had a blast, 3 of us went up for a hound hunt. He is 100% with hounds and only had 3 bait hunters not get there bear either by choice or missed. The food was great we had a lot of fun. Denny really knows his bear. I can't wait to go back. Not sure what he would charge for a non hunter to go along. Hit me up if you have any questions

the thrill is not in the kill, but in the experience

Re: Bear Outfitters with Hounds

Barnes, my hunts were all 5 days. pretty much if whatever outfitter you choose has good hounds the hunt is as close to 100% as you can get. the average bear in maine is 175lbs but larger bears are there. there are some really good outfitters in maine so do your research. i can only vouch for bob parker and he is one of the best outfitters i know up there and runs a top notch outfit. all jis equipment is top notch and he and his guides will do everything they can to get you a bear. i would go right around this time of the year as the colors are screaming up there about this time of year. hound hunting is the right way to go. it puts you right into the hunt where you are actually participating. heraring the hounds open up and the thrill of the chase is something you will remember a long time. also after you get a bear there are grouse all over the place to hunt.
