WY Merriam's

My father and I are looking to go with an outfitter this year. I have been looking at Trophy Ridge Outfitters out of Carlile, WY. Anybody ever hunted with them? And, what part of the season would you recommend we go? Early, Mid, or Late? Thanks in advance!!

Re: WY Merriam's

A buddy of mine hunted elk unsuccessfully with them in 2010. He said that they have a lot of land access, and they are nice people. Hunting Meriams is nothing like PA gobblers - extremely easy as we did it ourselves in Wyoming. Doubt that you would have any problems filling tags.

Take an older friend hunting or fishing - they're the reason we do what we do!

Re: WY Merriam's

That's good to hear. Stinks your buddy was unsuccessful, but those are the hunters that tell whether it was a good operation or not. Everyone has fun when your successful, it's when you go home empty handed that the truth comes out.

And I've heard that about Merriam's. My father and I might do it ourselves in the future, but for our first time in a new area, we figured it would be a good idea to go with someone that claims they know what they are doing.

Sputs:

I book for Trophy Ridge. I have sent A LOT of turkey hunters there in the past 3 years and all have tagged their birds. I have been there myself and can send you some pix of the cabins, birds and land if you'd like.

Not sure if you aware but eastern WY is going to be a one bird area for 2012. WY G&F is doing a research study and to do it right, they need to go to one bird for 2012. If it's a 2 bird hunt you want, let me know.

I always liked mid to late season but they have so many birds that they do well the entire season. I had a group from PA there fall for whitetails and we saw hundreds of birds.

I will tell you this, many Merriams hunts, including the Trophy Ridge hunt, are getting close to full for 2012.

Thanks,

Larry

Re: WY Merriam's

We hunted with Thomas Ranch Outfitters near Hulett and also Mon-Dak on the SD and Montana border. I would recommend Eric Thomas of Thomas Ranch. Lots of land and lots of birds. Good food too. Although two of us killed 5 gobblers between the two stops it was not easy. I think we were early and they were still in big flocks and not very responsive. I don't know if WY is two birds now or not. It was not when we were there in 2006.
