Virginia Deer Hunt

Does anyone know of any good guided deer hunts in Virginia ? If so I'd like to know about them. I'm NOT looking to go public land or self guided and please, I'm not looking to make this into a guided, self guided debate. It's close enough to drive and I'm looking for a place to go. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sab

Re: Virginia Deer Hunt

Springer,

Can you elaborate on your hunt with them? I talked to them quite a bit at the HBG show last year and was thinking about booking a hunt for this coming November.

Re: Virginia Deer Hunt

sab,

Not sure if I have anything that will help all that much but I hunted quite a few years in the early 90's in north western VA in Highland Co.(Red Oak Ranch) and Bath Co.(Fort Lewis Lodge). That is great country, really neat high pasture on the mountain tops at 3000 - 4000 feet, and was great hunting at that time. From my understanding though, that whole area suffered a big die off in the mid 2000ís and I donít know itís status now, so if you find outfitters in that country youíd be well served to explore the recent kill stats for those counties before booking anything.

I donít think anybody is hunting Red Oak anymore since Randy Butler (Virginia Guide Service) gave up his lease the other year; when I hunted it the owner Mac ran the hunt. Fort Lewis lodge was really nice, itís a full time 4 star Bed and Breakfast. They never did advertise hunting so Iím not sure if they are still offering hunts, but they do have a web site for the B&B with contact info.

Re: Virginia Deer Hunt

I hunted with them the last week of the season in 07 or 08. I booked the hunt for my teenage nephew and just sat in the stands with him. Weather was warm we saw lots of does but he was holding out for a buck. Not a bad hunt for $1000 you will hunt mostly family owned land, its fairly close for me at about 4 hrs. The locals do run hounds on deer some people dont like that, I dont mind since they did push some deer our way.

Thanks John. Same thing in South Carolina as far as the occasional issue with neighbors running dogs. Just have to take it in stride as it sometimes works to your advantage.

Thanks cwa for the nice comment on the buck.

Re: Virginia Deer Hunt

Hunted Red Oak Ranch in the 90's...Shot two small buck but many others got nice ones....After that I joined a club in Alebmarle county and for a decade enjoyed very good success....Just got tired of the drive after a while.

Re: Virginia Deer Hunt

The VA ML season usually opens right around Nov 1 so you can use an inline ML during the rut. Great time to go down.

Born to hunt, forced to work!
