PB Guide Service Maine Bear Outfitter Reviews

I am considering a fall bear hunt with PB Guide Service in Maine. Does anyone have any info on this outfitter? They are in the Skowhegan, ME 04976 area. Thanks in advance!

Re: PB Guide Service Maine Bear Outfitter Reviews

PB Guide Service is the Maine outfitter our company books for. Prior to offering them our contract, I checked a pile of references and even had the chance to meet with some of them face to face. I also sat down with Paul the owner to get a feel for his operation.

Unlike some of the Maine "bear camps" that are vacation spots that turn into bear camps, Paul is first and foremost a bear guide. He does offer deer hunts but bears are his livelihood.

The only negative feedback I received was that some of his stands could be in better shape. He uses a lot of homemade treestands.

His success rate has slipped a bit but mostly due to repeat clients going back to try to kill a bigger bear than they killed on prior trips.

Paul told me that beechnuts produce every other year up there and on years when the nuts aren't there, the bears hit the bait better. Last year there were no nuts. Don't get me wrong, success rates are still good on years with a beechnut crop it just means they have to work harder to get their bears.

It is also a great place to take kids and Paul really goes out of his way to make sure the kids get a bear.

Hope this helps.

Re: PB Guide Service Maine Bear Outfitter Reviews

Check bowsite and huntinfo for hunters reviews of guides and outfitters. I thought about going there but the reviews sent me away. I did so mainly cause of the cost. Also the outfitters have an opportunity to refute anything although most of the time they do not. Always makes me wonder. JMHO

I had a read a bad report also about a camp being overbooked. I discussed it with Paul and he explained how it happened and that he had messed up. I also talked to one of the hunters who was in camp when it happened to get his take on it. I do think that Paul missed the boat by not responding and just telling how this happened.

Larry I was told the same thing about the beechnuts and the years, thats why I was told to go on odd years. Would this be correct?

I did a drywall job for a guy who has done two hunts with PB. He was pleased and had taken two bear. The one he showed me was 250 pounds. He said he was going to go with PB again.

I believe you will get shooting opportunities on odd or even years but "possibly" see more on the odd years. If a bear hunt was something I was set on doing this year, I'd do it. If I was planning to do one bear hunt and not go back, I'd wait a year. The great thing about Maine bear hunts is the prices are reasonable as is the license cost. Plus you can drive there, so the total outlay isn't too bad especially if sharing travel expenses.

One suggestion would be to talk to some of the hunters that hunted even years to hear it firsthand as to what they saw and also how the camp made out as a whole.

Happy New Year!

Re: PB Guide Service Maine Bear Outfitter Reviews

Loggy, Ive seen hunts in maine anywhere from $900 thru $2200 depending on where you go what you want and what kind of hunt...bait or hound. There are some really goods guides in Maine and some really questionable guides in Maine. Again this is just my humble opinion but I do hate to see fellow hunters get screwed. Ive been on 3 bear hunts and sen a lot and talked to a lot of hunters as well as guides and references.
