Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

I was thinking about taking my 10 year old son there for a boar. Anyone ever been there or heard anything about it?

Re: Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

I was there a few years back. I took my father who has a very difficult time getting around. We knew going in that it was going to be a canned hunt. He got a 270 pound boar and I got one that was 350+ pounds. My dad was pretty stationary, but they kept me moving from stand to stand. When I went there they just reopened boar hunting, and to be honest they were over-run with them. Every sow had at least 5 piglets in tow. At one point after we got our pigs, they asked if we minded thinning out the 'lil ones. If you want anything else, just PM me, but it was enjoyable to get out with my father.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

Re: Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

I killed a Boar there in the mid-90's with my S&W 629 Classic 5" 44 Magnum. I wanted it to be more of a challenge so I went on the hunt with my open sighted handgun. It was fun and I got a nice Boar. Shot him twice in the chest at 25 yards to put him down. They have a great sense of smell are hard to sneak up on. They are also very tough and not easy to kill. The mount hangs in my room to this day. That being said I don't think I would go again but it was fun just once! Try it once and find out.

Re: Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

I went there waaay back in 1991. Went with a group of friends. We all hunted with bows. Everyone got a boar. To be totally honest. You could not pay me to go to a preserve again.
The animals deserve more respect than that. It is very easy and not hunting. It is killing.

At the time I thought it was cool, but even then, deep down I knew it wasn't very fair.

Canned hunts are frowned upon by many hunters. I can see why now. With that being said, look at it as if you are going to kill a hog for butchering for the freezer, not as a real hunt.

They are good eating though. I had the hams smoked by a local butcher and they were awesome. Got lots of sausage and some pork chops.

Many preserves have those Corsican rams. I hear they are terrible to eat. Heard this from several people that have tried it.

Re: Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

Thanks for the input. I ended up booking a deer/boar combo with Buck & Boar in South Carolina in Oct. Even talked my father into coming.

Re: Tioga Ranch/Boar Preserve

I have done a few preserve hunts and this is the only one I wouldn't do again. Good choice in going to South Carolina. I shot a blue boar down there several years ago when my brother was stationed in Columbia, SC. We had a great time. My boar went 250lbs. Also got to see my first otter in the wild feeding on fish in the South Santee river. Great experience, hope you have a great trip.
