sA Good Bear Hunting Resource
Folks, Bear Hunting Magazine sent me this book, Successful Black Bear Hunting. A lot of the mazazine is devoted to things that may work in other places, but this book really impresses me for being useful for Alaska. It also gets into the discussion on this forum of what makes a good outfitter.
Like the magazine, it goes on and on about bait, good info, but I'm not a good sitter and waiter. But I really like the info on bear sign. You'll see the huge droppings, the claw marks on alders, the paw prints, and you also will see where the bears have been feeding, especially in the spring. It is exciting material and useful. The article on calling bears is right on for Alaska. I do like the info in the book and in Bear Hunting Magazine on doing a lot of work all around a bait site and on trails leading to it, as a way to make up for the short time you spring hunters have to get your bait stations going. For those of us who are going to hunt over bait, you need to get scent, peanut butter and cooking oil distributed strategically, using sweets for bait. These things speed up the process.
I don't get anything for it, but I whole heartedly plug this book, Successful Black Bear Hunting, by Bill Vaznis. You can get it from Krause Publications at 1 800 258 0929. Even if you know all of this, it is good reading. I don't know what it costs. My copy was complimentary.
