When I was a kid I raised them in the cellar, it had a dirt floor so we built a bottomless box about 8 inches deep and set it on the floor. We filled it with Buss bedding and occasionally would put coffee grounds in the box for food. I would hunt crawlers on drizzly nights on a baseball and soccer field that was close to my house. I raised them for years, always had enough for my dad and brothers and I and I sold some to local fishermen who knew I had them. One think you have to do is carefully go through the box at least weekly and use your nose. One dead crawler will kill others and it stinks to high heaven as well.
When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!
