Bass Season Kicks Off June 14

HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 4) – With warmer summer weather finally here, anglers are gearing up for the start of bass season on June 14 and are expected to be out in large numbers on the state’s most popular lakes and streams, including PA’s Best Bass Fishing Waters.

“Bass are one of the top two most popular sportfish targeted by anglers,” said PFBC Executive Director John Arway. “And the Commonwealth has plenty of fantastic spots for anglers, including Presque Isle Bay and Pymatuning Reservoir, which were recently ranked 28th and 71st, respectively, on BassMaster Magazine’s list of Top 100 Bass Lakes.”

The start of bass season also falls on Father’s Day weekend, and Arway expects this to have an impact on participation as well.

“I can’t think of a better way for grandfathers and fathers to spend their weekend than outside fishing with their sons, daughters and grandkids,” he said.

As a promotional lead-up to bass season, the PFBC this year is partnering with Pocono Raceway to provide free youth fishing licenses to the first 200 kids who visit the PFBC booth at the Pocono ARCA 200 on June 7 at Pocono Raceway, in Long Pond, Pa.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Pocono Raceway on this promotional event,” added Arway. “We know that a lot of NASCAR fans also like to fish and boat, and a lot of our fans enjoy NASCAR, so it’s a natural fit for us.”

“As part of the event, we’re partnering with Pocono Raceway staff who are giving the first 200 kids the opportunity to receive a free youth fishing license, which they can immediately put to use on a fishing pond at the raceway,” he added. “It’s an easy way for them to experience fishing right before they get to enjoy the thrill of live NASCAR racing at Pocono Raceway.”

Kids will receive the free youth fishing license as a voucher, which they can immediately redeem at the PFBC booth at the racetrack. They can also redeem the voucher at a later date either online or at a licensing agent. More information is available at

The PFBC reminds anglers that “catch and immediate release” no harvest regulations apply to smallmouth and largemouth bass on the lower sections of the Susquehanna River (below Sunbury) and Juniata River (below Port Royal) and into the rivers’ tributaries to points one-half river-mile upstream from the confluence.
