Probably connected to feeder to raise and lower it.

actually the chain is used to tie them up before the season.......... in all seriousness, I had a feeded hanging on that chain last year until a wise ole bear decided after several weeks how to dismantle the feeder from the chain by breaking the metal attachment I use to secured the chain between tress. I decided not to use the feeder in this area this year, just too lazy to take it down. I think it adds nicely to the pix also.....use your imagination
