building a homebrew camera ?

What would be the best camera to get to build a home brew trail camera. When building a trail camera do you guys go out and buy a brand new digital camera, or try and find a used one from someone?

How do you plan on using it? If over bait/mineral, then your choices are really wide open. However, if for a true trail cam, then the choices narrow down quite bit. Also, do you want video or just stills?

Re: building a homebrew camera ?

Know it's a bit of a drive but on March 10 up here in North East, PA (town right on Lake Erie next to the city of Erie) we are having a homebrew workshop. If need more info just ask me for directions or go to hagshouse and in the cam workshop forum there is a thread on this started by me (IroquoisArcher).

Re: building a homebrew camera ?

I want one for a true trail camera. I only need still pictures no video. I think I will try and attend one of the homebrew workshops. I won't make the one on the 10th. probably will try to get to one if there is more scheduled

Re: building a homebrew camera ?

Oh, there will be more scheduled. Most of the times they've been down the Bellefonte area. Keep pestering woodsrat and maybe he'll see about hosting one! We have a big one each year usually by Snowshoe usually around the middle of June. Best place to keep up on this is over on hagshouse under the camera workshops section. Not taking anything away from the other forums but it just seems like people tend to go there more.

Re: building a homebrew camera ?

For a true trail cam, it's hard to beat building them with a Sony DSC-P41. If you don't mind adding a slave, then you might consider a Sony W290, it a bit noisier with the extending lens though.
