Aluminum vs plastic composite rails

Why is it that the vast majority of upper-end crossbows have aluminum rails rather than plastic? Is it a perceived value thing for the consumer or is there a real advantage (weight, stiffness, etc.)? All other things being equal, they would definitely be noisier: think about dropping pieces of aluminum and plastic on a concrete floor. All of the residual energy and vibration at the shot has to go somewhere. Am I missing something?

Re: Aluminum vs plastic composite rails

I would think that overall strength would be the answer.

Frist of all it cost more to make the aluminum one because it is machined and the others are molded. So I think it all has to do with cost, you pay for what you get.

Re: Aluminum vs plastic composite rails

The machined aluminum rails will actually vibrate less than the molded rails in my experience. (and therefore less noise) The carbon fiber will vibrate slightly less than the machined aluminum. The machined and carbon rails also give a more solid feel to the crossbow.

Is there any real advantages? There will be less warpage in the long term. The aluminum rails won't change much over time. They also tranfer less vibration to the shooters hands.
