gun season is killing me

I've made up my mind no more gun season, archery only. The slobs I've run into this year on private land trespassing and wild antics have turned against regular deer season. After hunting 45 years on the same 3 farms, and the 4th mine, in has really gone down hill big time. I'll beat the rush next year and take the month of October and relax.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.

Re: gun season is killing me

I started hunting archery season again for the first time in many years. Harvested my first buck in archery and a fine doe. Still had tags for 5B but did not go out until Thursday evening, Friday and Sat. Harvested another doe on Sat. Still have 1 5B tag to fill. I didn't miss that opening day of rifle circus one bit. Hope it works out the same way every year.

Re: gun season is killing me

I felt the same way the last several years but that did
change some this season. Rifle season isn't so bad if you
are on remote private land with a few other hunters around.
I still like archery season more but in the right situation
rifle isn't a crazy train of slobs. Good luck next year!

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: gun season is killing me

I'll be spending more of my efforts next year in archery season. What I've been experiencing this season has turned me almost completely against rifle seasons.

My son and I got "scoped" by a road hunter Saturday afternoon. It gave me a very sick feeling knowing that a loaded gun was pointed at me or my son. We got behind some trees and waited them out.

I'm begining to think that rifle season consists of driving slowly down a state forest road looking for deer. My wife has a blind near the road and she saw the same vehicle 22 times the first day of rifle. Road hunting is out of control this year where we hunt.

Re: gun season is killing me

Road hunting is a statewide problem. Where we hunt up in 2E I might see 1-2 other hunters in the woods per day. Eating lunch at the truck for an hour I'll see 3-4 roadhunters.

Re: gun season is killing me

This has been my worse deer season on public land yet. I came home Saturday and informed my wife I'm back to bow hunting next year. Bow and muzzleloader only. I realize we all have to share the woods, but walking up to a guy and determining 20 minutes after first light that you want to hunt 10 yards from me doesn't cut it. I love seeing so many guys and gals hunting, but if you see orange back off, find another spot.

Re: gun season is killing me

not to start an argument, but don't assume all hunters out for a ride are road hunting. me and my family have been doing what we call "road hunting" for years on miserable days when rain or bitter cold drive us out of the woods. we go for rides on SF and back roads with our guns cleared and cased with no intention of shooting anything or piling out of the car at the site of game. sure we stop and look around but theres no legal or ethical problem with that. we did it last tuesday as a matter of fact. we hunted in the pouring rain for 3 hours and then took a 5 hour ride around the county eating snacks and drinking coffee and pop. real road hunting is a lazy, shameful act and i would never tolerate it.

Ha ha, right. There's no slobs/road hunters in the archery family.

The spirit of our day is a soft acceptance of everything—except deep conviction in anything.
