success but what did I hit ?

had a nice size doe come in quartering towards me at 4:45 today. she stopped at about 25 yards and turned and quartered away. I placed my dot just behind her front shoulder aiming towards the opposite shoulder, took the shot and had a solid hit. I watched her jump and walk about 10 yards to a hill side and lay down. after about 5 minutes I watched her head fall to the ground. I waited another 10 minutes got down and slowly walked up to her. to my surprise I saw no entrance wound anywhere near my shot placement. as i rolled her over here I found my arrow went in about a half an inch above her bung hole, and exited in front of her left rear leg. The only thing that i can think is she bolted from string noise ? I know with a shot like this things could have went horribly wrong on so many levels and it wasn't intentional, but is there a major artery that I hit back there that made this such an easy harvest ?

Probably the femoral artery. But I'm surprised that she didn't go any farther. I shot a buck a few years ago with a flintlock. Long story short by the time the flinter went off the deer had turned and I hit her high in the hams. There was snow on the ground and I didn't find any blood for about 100 yds then the ground was covered with it. Found him about 200 yds away.

Femoral artery is probably what you hit. If you hit it, it will be lights out quickly for a deer.

Congrats on your kill.

Femoral artery accomplishes the same feat as heart shot. You likely had a deer that was full of bright red blood, when you opened her up. Small target to hit,and never reccomended, but it is one of those dumb luck hits that will save your face when things go wrong. Congrats on the kill!
