What do you use to uncock your crossbow?

I'm getting ready to buy a crossbow and have been wondering what people shoot into when they are done hunting? I don't want to carry a target around with me and up to camp. Is there a reason not to just let it cocked all season or a a few days of the hunt? I remember using a tip (judo or something like that) to shoot cans in the back yard with my first compound back 30 years or so. Not sure how they would hold up to a modern crossbow.

These are small, cheap and you can throw them behind the seat of your truck. I know some people will leave them at camp, so they have a target to practice a few shots with if they want. Their good target they will have at home.

Traditions only last if you pass them down to your kids!

To answer you other question, they don't recommend leaving them cocked other than when you are hunting. You should shoot them at the end of the day. I would not trust an old arrow plus if it is not heavy enough it could damage crossbow or worse you. Some people will just use one of their crossbow arrows with field point and shoot it in the ground. It will get beat up doing this, but they usually use one of their old practice arrows.

I believe also they only bows you can let down without shooting are the recurve variety and I am not sure if you can do it with all of them. I think most you have to shoot them to uncock.

I shoot mine into my bag every night when i get home from hunting. You dont really need to take a bag or block with you Just shoot it into your bag or block when you get back home or back to camp from hunting everyday.

Fishing, Turkey Hunting, Shed Hunting, Archery Hunting yep that's it!

A Excalibur can be decocked safely by hand. All others it is recommended to shoot to unload. I either shoot into a bag target at home or into the ground with a junk arrow. Depends on where I am at.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Next time you have a empty bag of corn around. Fill it with old clothes and tape it shut. Then wrap it tight with some sort of pallet wrap. Works like a charm.

Teach your wife to hunt, then you will not have to hunt for her in the mall.
