What would you have done?

Friday I was off and had a lot of activity. Grunting 6 point nose to the ground. 5 doe 50 yards out. One doe came to 30 yards (now most of you know I also hunt with a Crossbow), during the morning hunt I had my bow. I shot at the Doe and I could tell I hit it but It was back and low. Knowing this I waited 30 minutes went down to see the arrow found what I thought I would. Blood, but the wrong kind. I immediately left the woods. Came back 3 hours later. Brought my crossbow this time. I hunt on Semi private land where I can use my ATV. I am driving along back to where I had my stand and sure enough Mr. Big is standing 15 yards off the path. I stopped, shut the quad off got off the quad, cocked the crossbow then my senses came back to me. Wait dont shoot, you have a wounded deer or dead deer somewhere in this woods. This 8 point was out past the ears, thick horns and high. Would have been my biggest pa buck ever and I have taken a buck every year for the past 26 years. I did not shoot... It is killing me but I know I did the right thing.

The rest of the day I look for the doe. Stopped bleeding within 100 yards. I must have walked two miles, then looked again on Saturday, and then today. Just dont know where she went... but I did find Mr. Bigs bedroom...

Re: What would you have done?

I'm sure that was a hard decision especially since
the buck let you get off the atv and load your crossbow. I
know many guys would have shot it but I believe you did the
legal and ethical thing, I hope you get rewarded with a
better chance at him in the next 2 weeks!

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: What would you have done?

Getting off an ATV to cock a crossbow and shoot a buck sounds nothing like hunting to me. You did the right thing by letting him walk.

Re: What would you have done?

It's flat out illegal to get off of an ATV and shoot a deer. It's also illegal to fail to follow up on a deer. It's also illegal to shoot a second buck.No offence, but I wouldn't be patting myself on the back for not breaking serious game laws.I would personally be disturbed that the thought of shooting that buck even entered my mind.

An example of ethics overcoming desire. I commend you on your actions. Some on here are demigods and never do anything wrong, you sound like the average guy and did right!

Re: What would you have done?

Whatever,I can't even imagine getting off of a motorized vehicle with the intent of shooting a buck as I was on my way to try and recover one that I just wounded.I strongly want to believe that the average guy wouldn't have been tempted.

So do I dce, but the reality is, now a days, there are A LOT of guys out there who could care less about laws and ethics. OP - You did the right thing and who cares what you were thinking. If I acted on every thought that crossed my mind, I'd be locked up by now.

Re: What would you have done?

Back off Dice, a lot of people never would have thought twice about it. Actually is it illegal to turn the quad off, get off cock the bow, and if I would have decided to shoot would not have been illegal. It would have been illegal if I would have decided to shoot the deer from the quad. Getting off and moving way from it not illegal. As stated I did not shoot the deer, thought about it yes but you are right ethics over came my desire to shoot. I did not shoot a buck earlier I shot a doe.
