The last couple of weeks have been a little rough for me. I messed up two shots hitting one buck high above the backbone and then hitting a doe square in the front shoulder not getting any penetration. Needless to say both deer were fine after the non-lethal shots. I was really disappointed in myself as it had been a while since I botched a shot and then I did it twice in a week.
Took a week off of work this week to try and get one. Yesterday was a decent day seeing one good buck, a coyote, and 4 doe, but I didn't get a shot at any of them. With the rain this morning I decided to forget the treestand and I headed to a blind that sits along an old apple orchard in a pasture field. There is always a scrape every year under the one old apple tree and this spot has been good to us over the last few years with several buck hitting the ground. This morning right after daybreak this buck came cruising in front of me at 20 yards heading to that scrape. I stopped him and let the arrow fly. He didn't make it 40 yards. I was very happy to get the monkey off my back.
I had seen this buck before and I thought he had just grown a spike on the one side. Turns out that it is the main beam is snapped off just shortly after the brow tine.
