Scents/rattling/grunting etc.

Anybody use any of the above? I've tried scents in the past with little success. Same with a doe in estrous call and a grunt call. Anybody use these with success? When do you use them? Do you use anything now or wait until the rut? What about post rut?

I have had great success with "the can" and primos buck roar from the last week in October till the end of rifle.

Re: Scents/rattling/grunting etc.

Here is my go to:

Evercalm
VS-1 (Conquest)
Can call
Rattlin Bag
Grunt Tube

Evercalm all season.
VS-1 during the rut.
Can call pre-rut, rut, post-rut
Rattling bag pre-rut and post rut
Grunt Tube pre-rut, rut, post-rut

Keep in mind, this generally works in my area which is public land that doesnt get much pressure. Bucks/Doe in other areas may act differently. It's hard to determine. Best thing I can say is give it a try, if it works great, if it doesn't try something else.

I don't use scents. I generally only use calls when I see a buck then I know is going to pass out of range. I have had as many spook as be attracted to the call so I wait until I know they will not be coming closer then I try some calling.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Just remember in many places you can't use food based scents and in cwd areas you can't use urine based scents either.

Of all three the can call works best for me. When the rut is on I will call blind about every 30 min, and if I see a buck usually I can get him to come closer with it.

Yea, I'm aware of the scent regulations.

I was out this morning for a couple of hours. Actually called in my first buck. Also was the first deer I've seen this season. Some local construction really messed up the typical deer pattern. Anyway, a buck came out of the woods across the creek from me. I hit the estrous can call and he came straight over the creek toward me and stopped at 10 yards. He was a Y buck, so illegal. He hung out a bit sniffing around for the doe that wasn't there....then went back across the creek and left

I've had some limited success with sex attractant type scents. I've never had a deer respond positively to either rattling or grunting. I've also used "The Can" call, with not much success there either.

Re: Scents/rattling/grunting etc.

Only worked for me once. That was 3 years ago right around halloween. Had special golden estrous out on a scentwick and was occasionally blind calling using a can bleat/ grunt sequence. Had a a mature 8 pt come in on a string walking briskly right to the scentwick and shot him right under it. Also had I believe the same buck do the same the day before from the same stand but he stopped behind some brush and calmly walked back the way he came after sniffing the air a bit and looking around. Havent had it happen since and only try it occasionaly. Maybe he was just a dumb deer! Dont use the estrous scents anymore but occasional will blind call using the can and grunt tube or as someone else said I will try to call at a buck I see but isnt coming my way
