Cocking your xbow

I was just curious as to when you guys/girls cock your cross bows when you go hunting. Do you cock it before you walk in and just no put an arrow on it? Do you cock it when you get in your treestand/blind? Before you get in?
Let me know.. I just odn't know how bad it is for your limbs to leave it cocked for hours at a time

You and tequila make me crazy!

Re: Cocking your xbow

As a general rule, it is fine to leave your crossbow cocked while you are hunting. Even all day. Most manufacturers recommend you de-cock or fire it as soon as they days hunt is over.

I usually only cock mine when I get to my stand. Not much of a still hunter so my chance of getting a shot on the way in is nill.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Re: Cocking your xbow

I cock my bow when I get to where I'm going to hunt. Leaving them cocked for a long period of time (days or weeks) will cause the strings/buss cables to stretch. There is around 300 lbs. of force on the buss cables when cocked.

Re: Cocking your xbow

I cock and de-cock mine in my climber. It took some practice to master it, but I'm very comfortable doing it now.

The only time I may cock mine while walking in would be on an evening hunt during the rut walking in. Otherwise it's dark going in and dark coming out. Your bow should be de-cocked at those times.

It is hard to prevent oneself from believing what one so keenly desires

Re: Cocking your xbow

Most cock at the camp or truck and decock back at camp.

If you are hunting early or late, it is not safe nor quiet to cock at your stand. Leaving it cocked for days is not as harmful as cocking it rough and stressing the limbs. a straight even pull by hand or rope is best for it.

I have left mine cocked for a few months by accident, no problem still shoots to the same POI.
