First crossbow deer

I took my first deer during archery season this morning. A medium sized doe. Around 8am I had 10 doe, a button buck, and a large spike come through all around my stand. A number of them looked right up in the tree at me, and wandered on their way. I was thrilled that I wasn't busted. Unfortunately, I had no shot at ANY of the legal deer as my tree stand was poorly positioned (first time seeing deer in this stand, thought it was good, obviously it wasn't). After the deer moved through, I repositioned my stand (its a climber so I have that luxury). About 30 minutes later, two doe came back through. I hit the larger of the two at 12 yards. Arrow pierced both lungs....and somehow part of the stomach? She dropped about 20 yards off.

Two questions:

1. When I recovered my arrow, the mechanical blades (one) was bent. Is this normal? Also, I'm not so sure that more than one of them opened on impact....

2. I had a doe come by, on its own...and it was making a weird sound somewhere between a cough and a wheeze. The sound was not constant. I thought maybe it had pneumonia? I couldn't get a shot...anybody every come across something like this?

Not unusual for a mechanical blade to bend because once they open, they do not have the support like a fixed head.

Could be sneezing. I have seen deer do it many times. Doesn't sound like a person sneeze. It is a unique sound.

Congrats on your first deer!!

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!

Re: First crossbow deer

Good hunt. With mechanical blades they tend to get messed up. Even with a fixed blade broad head if you look at the blades after a hit they sometimes look as though someone was banging them on concrete.

Deer will make some funny sounds at time.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.

Re: First crossbow deer

No photos--I've shot many deer with a rifle, and somehow it didn't cross my mind on getting a photo with this one. Maybe the next now that you mentioned it!

Thanks for the info on the questions
