Doe down tonight!!

Been a slow start for me this year but that changed tonight. I have yet to see a buck this season and I am always looking for a good opportunity of the right doe. Been seeing alot of does, had many fawns under me and a few iffy shots at mature does that I passed on thus far.

Got to one of my stands that I have shot three bucks and two does from over the past three years. It is my favorite October stands nestled among residential communities. Beautiful evening with cool temps and a light perfect breeze out of the west. At 6:20 I can hear the distinctive sound of a deer headed my way...

Out of the thicket, a lone doe is headed my way which would take her past at about 20 yards. I made the decision to take the shot if it presented itself as she was a mature doe. Just as she was about to hit a shooting lane she turned and came straight at me...

She walked right under me but I let her walk on past to about 10 yards and stopped her with a grunt. She froze quartering away having no clue what the noise was. I held tight to the last rib, eased the safety off and squeezed off the shot....

At the shot, she kicked hard and trotted up the hill, tail and head down and I heard her crash on top. All was then quiet. I hope to never lose the rush that I was feeling. Even with a doe, I feel it every time. Going head to head with older deer on their turf is what keeps me coming back for more...

Knowing I made a good shot, and relatively sure of the quick kill, I regrouped, gathered my gear and made the descent to try to find my arrow. Found it quick and the sign on the shaft was what archers like to see...

Began heading out the trail following my landmarks that I marked from the tree. The trail was easy to follow..

After about 40 yards of tracking into a thicket I found my trophy piled up with the exit wound evidence of how quickly a well placed arrow does the job. The arrow entered high behind the last rib and exited just in front of the off shoulder low. Perfect..

As I usually do, I had a few minutes of silence with just me, the deer and the forest from which it came. I reflect on the freedoms we have and my ability to by able to do this... Got her cleaned up, took some field pics and headed for the car to share my story and success with my family and friends. Now I can focus on that buck that has been eluding me thus far. Excalibur Vortex, Hawke MAP, Gold Tip Laser II and G5 Striker broadheads. Good luck everyone!!

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!
