Deer harvest appears down in area by Dale Lolley

The two-week firearms deer season ended Saturday and, though thereís been nothing official, it appears the deer kill, at least locally, is down.

The official numbers wonít be out for a while, but judging from the hunters and deer processors I spoke with Ė and the overall lack of shots I heard while hunting Ė leads me to my belief.

I donít think it was unexpected, though.

After all, the Pennsylvania Game Commission did decrease the number of antlerless permits available to hunters in Wildlife Management Unit 2-A, which includes all of Greene County and most of Washington County.

Thatís a sure sign the commission believes the deer herd in WMU 2-A is smaller than previous years

I feel processor numbers are down due to the cold weather if it had been 60 degrees the first week of the season the processors would have been full. JMHO

take a kid hunting and fishing it will keep them out of trouble

The processor that I sometimes use told me that this rifle season was the best he's had in the past 4 years. Too many variables involved on why people do or don't use a processor to really factor that in as a true indicator. The number will be what they will be when they are released...and then we can have 6 more months of arguing about them.

The numbers will be the same as always. Theyll never come out and say... we killed 100,000 less deer this year.(hypothetical number)

What I say might not be the popular trend but at least Im not afraid to speak my mind!

Are you guys that are judging how successful the season was by counting shots taking into consideration that more and more deer are killed during archery and early muzzleloader seasons? Just because there isn't alot of shooting during the first day or two of rifle season doesn't mean there hasn't already been deer killed.

Iím a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

More camps open this year than any since HR and AR began. More hunters this year also. Most camps didn't have a single deer. Some had 1. I didn't see any camps with more than 1.

I heard a lot of shooting around the areas I hunt. After talking to a lot of the people hunting there. I found out more shots were at coyotes than deer.

I couldn't believe how many yotes were being shot at during bear season on drives. It sounded like a war. A running coyote is one tough target to hit that's for sure.

I'll wait for the official numbers to come out not what your opinion is....I love people who manage the whole state based on thier opinion of one area, makes me laugh how ignorant some people really are and how they think the world revolves around them.
