deer harvest numbers ESTIMATE

I keep reading on here the ESTIMATED deer harvests...I think its about time for the PGC to catch up with other states like ohio to get a more accurate acount of the actual harvests...A kill in ohio isnt legal until the hunter reports it either by phone or internet....We will then be able to take ESTIMATE out of the picture Its just my opinion on the matter.ITS time to catch up with the times and technology!!!! This is not intended to start a war but mainly to get the opinion of some PGC employees on this site.

Re: deer harvest numbers ESTIMATE

It is illegal to not report a deer in PA.
Do you think EVERY deer is reported in Ohio?

So basically they have the same type of system where it is dependant on trust that the hunters will report.
Look at states that have check stations...do you think every deer is is checked in?
Its been stated (even on this site) that some hunters feel they'll skew the numbers by buying tags and not use them or not report any kills

So basically even if its mandated that every deer is checked in, there is no guarantee that every one will be thus still making it an estimate

Once again, the system depends on hunters obeing the law, it is not a system problem, it is a hunter problem that the harvest figures are not more accurate on actual harvest.

Re: deer harvest numbers ESTIMATE

I would expect the state to have some idea of how accurate their estimates are? Does anyone know how accurate they think they are?

FYI, you can never take estimate out of the picture. Even if every person in the state who harvested a deer sent in a report the state can not know that. So any good process would have some methods to determine accuracy of any count.

Ohio provides and estimate of harvest. the only absolute number they give is the actual reported harvest number, but they do estimated harvest for the big number. There is a letter from a few years ago from the ohio Deer manager - basically he said - what PA does is fine - as what ohip does is fine. The similarity is no state captures all the data. Each system has its shortcomings.

Have it on the home machine - will try to remember to post this evening.

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.

Accurate enough to manage the resource but not accurate enough to use as a known number like many would hope be the case. They have spelled it out over the years and explained how it was accomplished. It is a formula that is accepted by the scientific community. No other method has met this level of accuracy to date.

It does and can be found on the PGC web site. Waugh!

Go to this webpage:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal...ity/deer/11949
Scroll down to Research Publications and click on:
Reporting rate variability and precision of white-tailed deer harvest estimates in Pennsylvania

There is enough good reading to which links are supplied on that page to keep you busy for awhile.

Wouldn't we all like to see a harvest report where every hunter was ethical and submitted a harvest report. It is disgusting that over half of those who call themselves "sportsmen" don't bother.

Re: deer harvest numbers ESTIMATE

The PGC gives the reported harvest and the estimated harvest.

Last year reported harvest: 111,630 "usable" harvest reports, 46,680 bucks 64,950 does

Based on the report rates last year the estimated harvest was, 122,930 bucks 193,310 does.
