The Ingenious Ways

After over ten years on the internet for me, it is amazing how some hunters can express, in so many different and varied ways, one problem and only one problem. And never say what their real problem is?

Of course, some hunters will never be happy with less than thirty deer or more per square mile. Less deer, of course, requires more hunting.

And I often wondered if these complaining hunters ever hunted just the same square mile or the same five acres.
I guess, if the deer disappear from those five acres, that's the "end of hunting."

And if they found a problem with the same square mile, why wouldn't they change locations? But then, if that were a problem, no real hunter would complain of that situation.

On the other hand, if you hired a professional manager to manage that sq mile for game, you would probably fire the manager if the game disappeared. The new prospect would be required to produce a plan to correct it to get the vacated job.

Somewhere down that rabbit hole is where we all are.

The real question is, how does a person who hires a professional manager to manage that square mile for game actually know if the game disappeared or if he is just incompetent and thus couldn't find the game? How would he, who has to hire the new manager know what a good plan to correct his "problem" is? The fact that the owner has to hire a manager to do the job suggests that he thinks he knows a lot more than he actually knows.

Few self-respecting managers would ever take a manager position if the person he worked for didn't even know what he wanted the manger to do.

I hunt deer in 2F, 5c/d. I hunt waterfowl in whatever unit they happen to be in on that day.

Re: The Ingenious Ways

The manager that I rely on produced a plan showing too many deer were on my sq mile. Herd reduction was approved and carried out. Here we are.

I know that I see signs of habitat improving as the manager said it would. Last time I was out, I saw a Charlie Brown. That would be a pine tree about 3 foot in height and deformed by old browsing activity. Sad little fella. But, Charlie had company. 3 new friends about 12 inches high..all perfect.

All I can do is go with the plan. Fill a tag if it's in the cards. Keep the managers feet to the fire. Require him to be proactive. Sit and wait is lazy. Don't want a lazy manager on my square mile.

As far as burning a couple tanks full of gas to fill a tag and sooth my ego.. for a deer?? My old taste buds prefer pork chops. Spend a $100 processing venison into something else to camoflage it??? Good golly.

Or if 50 owners had a different idea of what should be done!

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

One would gain a little more clarity and insight into that if they also considered that prior to the hired managers "work", the owner had no problems at all finding game.

Re: The Ingenious Ways

if my boss wanted me to paint his car red, i would, cuz he's paying me to perform a task for him. but hunters are not pgc's boss, as much as some think we are or would like us to be. we're the benificiaries of proper game management, not the reason for it.
