PA: Biologist says PGC deer numbers are deceptive

State College, Pa. - An independent wildlife scientist who has been sharply critical of the Pennsylvania Game Commission's deer-management program has issued a document questioning 2010-11 harvest estimates recently released by the agency.

In the report titled, "An Independent Assessment of the Game Commission's Estimated Annual Deer Harvests (2000-2010)," John Eveland, of Delmont, contends that the commission's calculations are not realistic or credible.

Old news. Eveland has been blowing off about his perceptions of such things, for some time.

If they are serious about their charges - they need to go the official legal route. They are making charges of conspiracy and corruption.

Now, if they really want to forever change the deer program - report the findings they have to the proper authorities and let them be investigated and prosecuted.

Anything else is just talk.

The ball in their court.

Talk is cheap,

Is your position a short term gain - or a long term loss? Separate the issues.

Re: PA: Biologist says PGC deer numbers are deceptive

its new to me and i happen to believe the PGC harvest numbers are inflated. not because the hunters aren't sending in their harvest cards as they claim.

its because they have nothing to report also known as "didnt get one".

also here in Erie county they hold a hunt on Presque isle state park every year to reduce the number of deer on the park.

in the paper the folks in charge were quoted as saying the park has 1,000 acres of good deer habitat and a population of 17 would be ideal. they killed 8 deer.

they also said they had NO IDEA of how many deer are in the park. how is that responsible management?

same agency that calculates the numbers for the entire state?

Without check stations there is no way to tell how many are killed...I have seen many people while out hunting who do not tag deer and are out hunting the next day..I find that the deeper in PA you go where most hunters do not travel to border states to hunt there are more hunters who do not tag..

NO the PGC needs to start setting up roadblock check points as they have done in the past...Why should I have my tires cut for turning someone in...

Man it just doesn't stop. Used to be JS that was the "expert" and revealed the "smoking gun" against the PGC and now it seems that Eveland is that "expert". What a joke.

told you guys...the politicians are coming and we will have no one to blame for it except the PGC for turning a deaf ear to the sportsmen and women of PA.

notice i said the PGC as in the bureaucrats and not the WCO's...the WCO's have nothing to do with this. this is not a complaint about the WCO's just the bureacracy involved in the management of OUR herd.
