Re: Deer Survival

So someone who likes deer meat and legally harvests a doe is a fool to you? Just because your precious camera is missing a few deer doesn't mean they still aren't there.

Re: Deer Survival

Sounds to me like you would be happier playing dominos than hunting. My God, you are missing 20 deer, better call the Pinkertons.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Re: Deer Survival

I thought Pike County was coyote capital of PA?

Maybe Rep. Mike Peifer could tell you where the doe went?

Re: Deer Survival

Were there 25 deer in the picture and now there are only 5? How exactly are you counting 20 fewer deer? I run trail cams and I can't count how many deer I have. Please share your population estimating technique

I miss my hunting partner

Now is a bad time for using trail cameras for populations estimates. During the right time of the year, one trail camera for every 50-100 acres will paint a great picture of the deer population.

Once antlers are developed enough to distinguish characteristics, a trail camera can be used to determine population. Pick a open area and establish a preferred bait for several weeks. Place the trail camera and monitor the deer that come.

Determine individual bucks based on antler characteristics and the total number of bucks that visit. Determine the percentage of individual bucks of the total and apply that same individual percentage to total antlerless deer to come up with the number of individual antlerless deer.

You now have a deer pretty good deer population number based on the time of year you surveyed. This can be compared to other years to gauge population trends.

I support all hunters, regardless of weapon or technique!
