Looks like the metal ring ? I'm gonna say that a wagon wheel from the 1860's, whether it be a metal ring, or the wooden wheel itself, would not hold up to be found in the 21st century. Unless of course, it was not exposed to the elements, such as in a barn or something along that lines.

if it is in that good of shape, it must be wrought iron. the last wrought iron made in the usa, was in early 1900, 1906 i believe. wrought iron will last longer in the elements than the newer steel alloys.

I found a long wrought iron spike in the woods, probably from th old logging days. You can see the ropy looking texture in the iron, almost like strands of wood in a branch. Todays steel just doesn't look like that.

About 25 years ago I was doing a little blacksmithing and tried to find wrought iron, but couldn't. I read that occasionally someone finds some in some old warehouse or something, but that was rare. I also read that at that time, there were 2 places in the world that still made wrought iron, on a very small scale, and sold it to people doing ornamental iron work. The one place was in England the other in Japan. Their prices were high.

Re: Neat Elk co find

Looks like a nail in it right around the 11:00 mark. Or is it just a mark on the block wall I see. If it's a fixture, is it a square head ?
