Eldebritches?

Has anyone ever of eldebritches in the woods? Maybe I'm spelling it wrong.

I have a vague memory of older people talking about these, usually sitting around a fire along with stories about sidehill dodgers and going "snipe hunting."

Re: Eldebritches?

Same as snipe hunting in PA dutch areas. End result the same too, someone is left holding the bag!

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Re: Eldebritches?

It all depends who is describing it. Small animal, big eyes, sharp teeth and mean, many other variations. The idea is you get some sap and talk all day about hunting them that night. When night comes you tell him he will have the honor of holding the bag while everyone else drives the critters into the bag. He is cautioned not to let any escape because they are worth money and you are going to divide up the nights take. You take the guy out into the woods far from camp and tell him to stant there while you drive the critters to him and he will have to open the bag and let them run in to hide from the drivers. Everyone then goes into the woods yelling and eventually the yells stop and everyone is gone back to camp. Leting the guy standing in the middle of the woods in the dark,"holding the bag".

Re: Eldebritches?

mein Grossmutti!

Another description of Elfterdritches that I read, stems from the PA Dutch having alot of opposites in their culture. for instance: 7 sweets and 7 sours were to be served with dinner, Farmers were to have two farm dogs, for luck named Feuer and Wasser (Fire and Water) A Distlefink was supposed to be a bird of joy and happiness and the Elfderdritch was the opposite of the Distlefink. I have seen a two pictures of the mythical Elfderdritch. In both paintings they were birds with giant claws and oversize beaks with horrible shark like teeth.

Perhaps similar to Lewis Carroll's Jabberwock

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!"
