Hawk Mountain and Matthias Schaumbacher

Does anyone know the legend of Matthias Schaumbacher. He owned a tavern on Hawk Mountain from the 1850's through the 1880's. His name is often mispelled and he is typically referred to a "Shambock." He is said to have murdered 11 people at the tavern over the years and the place is supposed to be haunted (although I don't believe in that sort of thing).

I am very interested in the local history here and have a fair knowledge of it. I wondered if anyone else knows of the legend of Shaumbock's Tavern?

Re: Matthias Schaumbacher

Charles Adams (local historian)has the story in one of his books Ghost stories of Berks County. Don't know which one(I think there's 3). The house itself is supposed to be the little white cottage on the right as you go up from the Berks side. It was the gift/vistors center but is now a private residence

Re: Hawk Mountain and Matthias Schaumbacher

That is pretty good coverage by the blog. Schambacher actually leased it from George and Pricilla Bolich, the owners after the Gerhart family.

A confusing side not: The present location of the Bolich cemetary is the site of the massacres. Jacob moved to the Schambacher property several years after the massacre. It appears that George W. Bolich was the subsequent owner of both properties. Perhaps they were both part of the same tract in those days.

In addition to the 9 killed at the Gerhart home, two children were killed and scalped at the home of Frederick Reichersdorfer on the same day. One of the victims, a girl, was found alive but scalped in the field. She died a short time later from her injuries.

Fleroo, the last mountain lion shot in Pennsylvania was also shot in the area. It was shot by a man named Anson. If you look for the Anson Panther you can find some info. I know where it was shot.

Wow, interesting read. I have heard of similar indian
attacks in the Pittsburgh area in the 1700s.
