I Plead Ignorance

So If I lived in an area with a high degree of a tornado hitting like say in the next 24 hrs.

My kids would have been at home.

Tragic...prayers

Another day in paradise. God hunts on Sundays.

Yes, this is very tragic. However, I don't think the techniology exists that allows us to predict these things with any real time buffer. It's my understanding that this one gave only 5 minutes of warning before it formed and struck. I suppose that the only thing they can do is construct community, or family, underground shelters. But then again, there is the issue of cost for the construction of shelters and the issue of cost relative to property loss for any dwelling that is above ground. Frankly, I don't see how to avoid these monsters.

Re: I Plead Ignorance

I have to wonder why a place that tornados are common doesn't have shelters in the schools.

x3. And to put a sharper point on it: I would think that where there are typically large concentrations of people, especillay schools where kids are, that some sort of beefed up construction / engineering could be done, if not to the whole structure then to selected portions of it, that would serve as a safe haven. Here's a long shot: maybe the buildings need to be constructed with a lowered profile like a geodesic dome? I am no engineer and what little I know of these storms is terrifying, not only in power, but in terms of unpredictability and freakish selectiveness in dammage results.

Re: I Plead Ignorance

Our schools were always designated shelters..during the fifties and sixties with the nuclear threat...

Funding was the reason given this morning on the news.

It also doesn't help that Oklahoma sits on bedrock just under the surface.. That's why none of the houses have basements out there. Its way too expensive so they build storm shelters.

I don't have ducks. I don't have rows. I have squirrels. And they're drunk.

Re: I Plead Ignorance

Funding issues makes sense. Its a lot easier to have hindsight than it is to convince people to raise taxes for school buildings. Not judging anyone......just pointing it out that its not easy figuring out where to draw the line with buildings and safety features that can be added....it is easy to look back and judge.....
Also, I have to wonder how old the buildings were.....I would think technology is better today and they will build a better school this time around
