Lehighton man found dead, hanging off of boat

Quote:
Police in Carbon County are investigating yet another death at a state park -- the third in four days.

Investigators say 25-year-old William Andrews III of Lehighton was found dead Wednesday, hanging off a small fishing boat in Beltzville Lake.
I am not sure what the reason is but it seems we are having a lot more drownings this year. I know outdoor activities has dramatically increased in this area with Rails to Trails and the big surge in kayaking and other watersports but folks need to consider safety equipment.

This one sounds like it may be from a medical reason though.

I would hazard a guess that at least 1 of the deaths involved alcohol ...

Maybe....I dunno.
I kayak the Lehigh River most weekends because of the dam releases and there is never a shortage of tubers & rafters toting along a cooler of beer.

Re: Lehighton man found dead, hanging off of boat

I been raised and lived along the river and learned to swim in the river from the get-go. Pretty much played in the currents of the low head dams and such. So to me the river levels we been experiencing this summer in my opinion are nothing that bad. But that doesn't mean it isn't bad enough for someone less experienced than I.

There has been an explosion of activity along the river this year and I think it's the latest thing for the yuppies to hike, bike the rails to trails, and partake in watersports.

I read an article on Jim Thorpe the other week and how they won some national recognition for being 4th in some small town thingy on the travel channel. In that article it said that the outfitters on the river up there were taking close to 6000 people a week on some type adventure up there.

I'll see if I can't dig up the article.

So much for enjoing the peace and calm of the outdoors!

In June, Pocono Whitewater, a Jim Thorpe company that takes 3,000 people a week on white-water rafting and biking trips and paint-balling adventures, said it was already 600 customers ahead of last year.
This is just one outfitter up there doing 3,000 a week but I read somewhere in an article total numbers were about 6,000.
But with the weekly dam releases it has turned into a watersports mecca.

Travel buzz turns Jim Thorpe into tourist haven

The Army Corp of Eng. used to be adamant about not having releases from Francis Walter just to support the rafters. Seems they've changed that philosophy.

I don't think the releases are for the whitewater enthusiast specifically. Think it has more to do with supporting the fishery. The whitewater stuff is just a side benifit.
