Does anyone know where to find old fashioned fasnachts in the State College, Bellefonte, Lock Haven region?
On another website, people were saying the real, authentic, old school fasnachts don't have any filling. And that they are made with a sourdough type starter. And that they are cooked in lard.
I've never eaten that type of fasnacht. When I was a kid, what we called fasnachts were cream filled, and were coated with powdered sugar.
I'd like to try the old fashioned type of fasnachts.
The Kennies supermarkets down here are taking pre-orders for them now.
The plain ones are all I've ever known. My mom always made them. Had to eat them fairly quick after they were made, because they got pretty rubbery after a few hours.
Weis supermarket bakery, believe it or not, actually makes a pretty decent traditional fasnacht.
Being cheap, I always look for them , and usually have pretty good luck finding them, on the quick sale rack. If I don't find them there, I will pay full price...the full price fasnachts are just as good....:smile_big:
For those looking in the Hanover area, Miller's County Store makes good, real fasnachts. I make sure I grab a few each year, lest I forget and deal with the wrath of my wife
I may swing by the local Mennonite produce stand that also has baked goods. See if they’re gonna have any on Tuesday.... it’s beer enough to work I can run and grab some in just a few minutes.
