Papal Visit

Not to be disrespectful but what is with all the restrictions with the Popes visit? We had many dignitaries come in and out of this state, even the Pope before and in no time do I ever recall square miles of an urban city, miles of state highways and a major bridge between two states being shut down intentionally for up to 72 hours.

We had a meeting with PECO about if we were not ready by the 22nd of Sept to have our transformers installed they couldn’t do it till after the Pope leaves because no cranes or bucket trucks were being allowed into the BOX after that. This box they refer to is close to an 8 sq mile area.

They keep saying how this is going to bring in over 400 million dollars into the region but what about the businesses that its going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in delays, lost production and places like hospitals that are requiring their staff to live in over the popes stay. All city police and fire department time off has been canceled. Hotels, restraints and the voulchers renting out their homes to visitors for 20,000 @ week are the only people cashing in.

I know it’s a very dangerous time in the world and the pope is a high value target for all those radical groups out there but what was Corbett and Nutter thinking to have them pursue such a high stakes venue and host it in a place that will be so difficult to protect? Secret service is suppose to run the show, with FBI, 1,000 PSP, the entire Philadelphia Police department and National Guard on stand by.
Now if the pope does what he is notoriously famous for, walking among the people, all bets are off. JMO I think they should strap him in the Pope mobile and drive him around, set up closed circuit screens along the parkway, telecast a mass and speech from St Charles seminary and call it a day and get him on a plane and back to Rome where it’s safe.

My ability to remember lyrics from songs of the 60's far exceed my ability to remember why I walked into the kitchen

Re: Papal Visit

It's not worth it. Tell the people who want to see him to go to Rome.
It's way easier to secure the Vatican than a 8 square mile area of a major U S city.
They will spend/loose 3 times the 400 million........and like Birch pointed out...."if" they actually brought 400 million into the area, at whose expense does that come ?

Your never to old to learn something stupid
