Stupid ? Prolly, but......

OK, this is going to be odd, but stay with me here. Let me preface the following idiocy by saying I am well-versed in chainsaws, over 30 years worth of using them ON THE GROUND. I have 2 maple trees that have to go, as they are threatening my house. I called 3 different tree services to no avail. None even came to give a bid. So now I'm whizzed off and ready to do this myself. Ok, here goes the nutty part... and question. Have any of you ever used a climbing treestand to de-limb branches on the way up, then top off, then cut as you descend ? I know, I know crazy right..... but I'm thinkin' Would it work ? Has it worked ?

The limbs cannot hit my house by cutting. However, if the trees fall on their own, they will surely be living with me inside the home. My guess on each, is somewhere between 50-60 ft high. I certainly would have a harness, and I know it would be a slow process.

Alright, let's hear it.

Re: Stupid ? Prolly, but......

It would not be high on my bucket list...........but it could be done.

I would cut the limbs off on the way up as far around the tree from the stand platform as I could. And I would cut each one twice.......once about 2 feet out from the trunk to keep it from hitting the stand as it fell off. Then cut the2 foot limb stump off before moving on up.

When topping and moving back down, I would cable each section off to another tree, a tractor or a truck 180 degrees away from me to completely eliminate the possibility of anything falling toward me.

I would probably do some looking and figuring to see how far I had to go up to top the tree and be SURE to miss the house. That's ALL the farther up I would go. Rather cut the most of it up on the ground than in the air.

Use wedges to be SURE you don't pinch your saw !! Doesn't take a very big limb to pinch you BUT GOOD. And it would be a son of a gun to get one loose doing what you are doing.

For every cut...........think it out 3 times, then cut once.

Dale,

And if a piece falls wrong because of weight distribution, or a saw bucking pops a piece your way, you ain't that fast! Injury can, and often does occur.

My father (Twp. road worker) was in a Payloader bucket, harnessed to the bucket, to trim trees along the roadway. His coworker was operating the bucket controls. A limb that was bucked by the saw lashed at his knee. Yes a bit of a freak accident.

But it blew out four ligaments, tore up the meniscus, and turned the top of the tibia (the knuckle area) to bone meal.

I would keep trying for an outfit to do it. Their liability vs. yours.

Or use a safer method to drop them... a come-along, pulley and cable, mounted as high as you can reach, and situated right, can pull the tree away while felling it.

I doubt they would pay out. "Accidental Death and Dismemberment" is completely different than "Accidental Death and Stupidity"

Re: Stupid ? Prolly, but......

you got three things that can hurt you. the saw, the limb, the fall. i cut trees for a living and i never get off the ground with a saw in my hands.

sounds like if you can climb them with a climbing treestand, they must not be too big? it usually doesn't take too much of a pull to guide trees where you want them to go. felling them whole would be the way to go if theres room.
