"The Last Alaskans"

Anybody catch this on Animal Planet.

A real reality show that follows 4 cabins with families, couples, and a single guy living in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Tells their stories about truly living off the grid, hunting, fishing, and trapping. Some have been living in their cabins for 40 years. It has received very good reviews even from the Alaskan press.

Season one only had 8 episodes and it has been renewed for a second year. IMO, well worth watching if you can.

Re: "The Last Alaskans"

I like it, the last episode I watched everyone was having a problem killing a moose for meat for the winter. Kind of pitied them.

It's a three man crew. When they show the overhead shot of Bob's cabin site look for a tent. That is where the crew stays. They are visitors and it appears they try to minimize their footprint on the show. It took quite a bit of jawboning to get these folks to even agree to let them be there. There are others doing the same thing and have refused to let the show film them.

When it's 60 below, I'm not too sure anyone's too comfortable.

Re: "The Last Alaskans"

Good show. I enjoyed the part where the guy goes into town to buy steaks for a dinner he's having because he's out of moose meat. As he's going through the grocery store meat he talks about the enjoyment he gets from being able to cut whatever he wants from a 1200 LB animal as opposed to being forced to buy overpriced, prepackaged meat. I brought my wife into the room to show her segment, we laughed because that's me to a tee. I haven't bought beef in years and shake my head every time I walk through the meat department at the grocery store. $17 for a 2.5 LB rump roast. SMH.

I realize it's not a commentary on the people portrayed in the show, but I lost some respect for the show when they captioned the guy shooting in his '06 with "the .30-06 fires a 30mm projectile...."

I actually paused the show and re-read it and ranted to my family for a good 10 minutes.

Have to remember that it is produced by Animal Planet.

Also saw one of captions about how it was necessary to hunt and trap to subsist there but that Animal Planet would stay neutral on the subject, or something to that effect.

The subjects have an interesting story to tell and I am glad they are getting the opportunity to tell it.

I also read that they were considering not using film crews next season. Similar to what the guy on the PBS show did.
