Hornady SST

Anyone using these slugs in 2 3/4 12 Ga. ?
If so what are thoughts on them?
Just bought a couple boxes to try them in my slug gun(fully riffled barrel)
I had been using Rem. Accu Tips with decent results but are $7.00 a box more than the Hornady's.

Re: Hornady SST

I sell a pile of slug barrels, my first recommendation for a sabot is the Rottweil "Laser Plus", followed by the Lightfield Hy-Bred. That said I get reports from people having good results with other brands however I personally never had really good accuracy results with the Hornady.

Re: Hornady SST

SST's shoot great in my Mossberg 500. Grouped the best for me.
They also put big holes in deer

Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog!
If it's locked up and put away - Your NOT safe!

Re: Hornady SST

I am growing not to like these slugs at all! Group very well out of my guns but have poor performance on deer. Let me explain... I have shot to deer in open woods that died within 10 yards. On the other hand, I have shot 3 deer thru very light brush. 2 of which I followed for hundred of yards and never recovered. The other, which had maybe 5 twigs infront of the vitals, was found at least 250 yards later. That doe had 3 small holes barely making it into the vitals. Seems that the lightest of brush causes these slugs to shatter. Anyone else have this problem??
I will be switching to lightfields or copper solids next year.

Re: Hornady SST

Have had no complaints so far shooting them out of my 835 with a rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount. Taken quite a few deer with them and the only one that Diddnt drop in the spot went 10yds before piling up. Like any bullet it you hit any twigs or brush its going to start expanding and should be avoided.

Re: Hornady SST

I just put a rifled slug barrel on my 870. My first three shots over iron sights at fifty yards with the sst ammo went just over an inch. Brenneke 3 inch k.o. slugs did almost as well.

Re: Hornady SST

I've been reading about the Rottweil Laser slugs and they look pretty mean.
The only reason I bought the SST's is because I had a Dicks gift card and that's all they had in 12 Ga.

Re: Hornady SST

Yep nasty slug! I shot them when they were made by hastings! Worked pretty well on everything I hit!
