870 slug gun ammo

This year will be my first time I am hunting with slugs and was looking for some advice on what slugs others get to group well. I'll be shooting a 12ga 870 express w/ a 23inch cantilevered Remington barrel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Re: 870 slug gun ammo

Start with the Wichester BRI/sabots from Kmart.
About $11.00/box.
Once sited in at 40-50 yards, you can try different brands. which cost more.

Re: 870 slug gun ammo

Try several brands....

Slug guns can be finicky with ammo. In other words, what works for one may not work for the next. My Mossberg doesn't like the Rems, Hornady, or the Winchesters that I have tried (yes your shoulder takes a beating during the test runs). I tried Lightfields and cut the size of my groups in half compared to any other slug I have tried, so thats what I use. My buddy tried the Lightfields in his 870 and they performed poorly, he went to the Rem Coppers and they shoot very well from his gun.

You can't go wrong with Lightfield slugs.

Re: 870 slug gun ammo

+1 on the lightfields. I also shoot an 870 w/ cantilever. I can touch 3 together at 50. They drop about 2" at 100

I've always been crazy, but it keeps me from going insane.

Re: 870 slug gun ammo

Remington Copper Solids shot the best out of my 870.

Re: 870 slug gun ammo

I agree with esox hunter. Your probably going to have to play around with diffrent types of ammo to see what shoots the best.
