What choke for slugs?

I purchased a nova pump gun back in april and and looking to hunt deer with it. What choke should I try using slugs? The shotgun came with I/C, modified and full. 28" smooth, not rifle barrel. Thanks

Re: What choke for slugs?

I/C is best for Foster slugs out of a smoothbore barrel. True cylinder is often better if they offer it in a tube.
That being said, I know two old timers in my life that have laid literally hundreds of deer down with full choked antique Ithica 37's. If you shooting is close and fast, I don't think it matters a whole lot, MHO.

I'd have to agree. I own a Remington 870 with a 28" barrel. I use an Imp Cyl choke with Remington Sluggers. I can drop'em all day up to about 75 yards. Never really took a shot any further than that.

Re: What choke for slugs?

Thanks for the info guys. When looking at Remington's site it shows the boxes for Slugger and Managed Recoil Slugger - both say rifled slug. Can I use them in a smoothbore barrel?

Yes. They are " Foster" slugs. ( old fashioned punkin balls ) You don't want to waste the money on premium sabot rifled slugs for a smooth bore barrel, there is no rifling for them to engage.

Re: What choke for slugs?

Delaware is a shotgun state , I always use Mod in a smooth barrel, I use Federal or Brenneke slugs.
